Reading always seemed like a somewhat annoying task from time to time, I wasn't always a book reader simply because the size, the just perpetual reminder to bring this big behemoth of a book, or this annoying atrocity that weighed 15 lbs with sharp corners for no reason. It wasn't until I started using my cellphone to read actual books did I become interested in picking up a good read, simple small device that traveled well, but there is a problem, the sun, a florescent light bulb, a constant wiggle trying to accommodate a light bulb out of place, utterly annoying. Until one day, I bought a Kindle Paper White.
Now let's talk about WHY I bought a Kindle Paper White, being a non-reader it was quite an odd change of pace right? Well I've been seeking ways of learning new skills, acquiring certifications like CompTIA Network+ or the EC-Council Certified Ethical Hacker, and for me every book I bought cost an arm and a leg, it was bulky, it was annoying, it was heavy. They had dimensions like 7.6 x 2.2 x 9.5 inches and weighed a coupled lbs. each. Awkward, heavy, non-reader who just wants to learn something from time to time. I don't want to invest my time into remember to carry a giant heavy book I'll most likely not get around to remember reading that day. In an attempt to purchase something not as bulky, and somewhat easy to just throw in the glove compartment and forget about, the Kindle was more than a great choice to start with.
Specs
To start the Paperwhite only weighs only 7.5oz (212 grams), so it was extremely light, and the weight was a non-issue. In terms of size its 6.7 x 4.6 x 0.36 in, so its smaller than a regular book that I'd be buying and toting around with. By being a digital format the font can adjust in size as well, opposed to a regular book that, yeah you're going to be stuck with the font size, shape, and color.
To top it off, by being digital ink opposed to a standard screen, the display is virtually unobstructed by light sources, AND its back lit, so you can read at night. All of this sounds too good to be true without sacrificing battery life right? Surprisingly you'd be wrong, the Kindle Paperwhite usually stays charged on mine for over a month.
In terms of storage, the Kindle Paperwhite has 2GB of on board storage, and seeing as books are text, their size is only limited to how many words are in the book. Meaning you can store an entire book shelf, or even library, in a pocket sized device (well if you have large pockets I guess)
My list of books
As I'm a huge networking, security, and computer enthusiast here are a couple books I currently have on my Kindle Paperwhite.
- CompTIA Security+ SY0-401 Cert Guide, Deluxe Edition (3rd Edition)
- Thug Kitchen: The Official Cookbook: Eat Like You Give a F*ck
- Hacking: The Art of Exploitation: The Art of Exploitation
- Arduino For Dummies
Cost
Cost wise here the price of the first book hard back is $30.73, for the kindle though its $22, thug kitchen is $12.50, or $11.87 on the kindle. hacking the art of exploitation is $29.97 brand new, or $22.99 for the kindle version, and lastly Arduino for dummies is $17 brand new, or $13 on the kindle. We are talking a few dollars here and there between each so is that $110 investment worth it?
Most of the books listed above have a 30% difference between their retail cost and their kindle counter part, only outlier is the Thug Kitchen. To recoup that $110 investment you'd have to spend $366.67 at the rate of 30% to recoup. BUT we aren't just buying a portable library, we are paying for convience, so whether you do recoup the investment, or not, you're still pulling ahead. Odds are you won't forget to bring it with you in comparison to a big bulky odd shaped book. Convenience alone makes that $110 worth paying, and for me I've invested well over $366, probably well over $500 on educational material (and deadpool comics) since I purchased my Kindle.
Summary
The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite is a GREAT investment, even for those of us who are by our own admission are "non-readers", the ability to carry a full library of comic books, text books, fiction, and much more, may intrigue us to start reading again. Definitely pick yourself up one, you won't regret it.
