Black Hat Hackers

Looking back at older posts, the words "black hat", "white hat hacker", and "grey hat" appear a LOT, without explanation, who are they?  What are they?  It may be time to break it down and go in depth with what each type of hacker is, who they are, and what they do.  With a side note, we're going to introduce new types of hats, "green hat", and "elite hat" in this series of hackers.  That's right I'm going to have a whole article on each type, due to their complexity, they require an entire article.
Black hat, the most infamous of hackers out there, the type of hacker everyone visualizes when someone on the news machine says "hackers did something somewhere for some reason", without context the first thought is a nefarious ne'er do well, seated behind a series of flat panel monitors in a basement somewhere.  When realistically... you can't paint a picture of who or what a hacker looks like.  Physically no two look the same, no two share the same background, no two have the same life style, hacking is a field where there is no bias, no prejudice, everyone is the same.  Within our society as it grows, the berated and down trotted have a place to call safe, the internet. Not just the berated and down trotted though call the internet safe, but those of intellect and a desire for knowledge.

Both of these parties benefit from the teachings of the black hat.  Both for different reasons, the first group for revenge, and the second to grow mentally.  One of the biggest key focal points is... you aren't going to be breaking your own stuff and learning from it, you're breaking someone elses, so whats the big deal right?  Little costs on the end of the hacker, huge costs on the end of the hackee, but that's not the problem of the person wearing the hat.

Quite often there acts aren't just done for malevolence, yet they are done for a cause, a revolution in silence.  Hiding in the shadows waving their flags hidden from the eyes of government, and from the public, posting, sharing, and streaming confidential data from businesses and governments world wide to expose crime and corruption from the top down.  Hacker organizations such as Anonymous are a key player, their tactics are that of a black hat, taking down doors, walls, and locks, in covert operations to show corruption and fraud in government and business.  Their actions are neither good, nor bad once they hit the main stream with their findings, some praise them as saints, some demonize as sinners.  Anonymous is a great example of a group of black hat hackers working towards good or evil with tools that aren't ethical for the masses.

On the converse, their are those who hack for profit, skimming credit card info, bank account numbers, social security numbers, just all around horrible actions to take advantage of individuals and ruin their lives.  They view it as an income, and as said before, they aren't the ones suffering, nor do they ever have to come face to face with their victims ever, the remorse doesn't exist.

Another clever tool often used by blackhat hackers, is a tool known as ransomware.  For more information about ransomeware, check out this article by our friends over at comparitech.com.

Are all black hat organizations unethical?  Or are their unethical tactics used for ethical reasons?  Yes their are fully well rounded unethical hackers out in the world.  But that's just the tip of the iceberg, we have more hats to try on, lets keep looking and see what fits you best.  And as always, be safe my goblins.
