Purism and PureOS, a Free (as in Freedom) Linux

The group behind the new Linux distro, PureOS is working hard to develop a completely free and privacy focused OS for all of us who are wanting something more focused to the original goals of *nix.  A great interview with the CEO, Todd Weaver explains a lot about the Purism goal and how that is progressing.

The PureOS Desktop
To know what Purism is all about, here is their philosophy:

  1. Purism will only use free/libre and open source software in the kernel, OS, and all software.
  2. Purism will design and manufacture hardware that respects users’ rights to privacy, security, and freedom.
  3. Purism will prioritize privacy, security, and freedom for our users.
  4. Purism will not discriminate against persons nor groups nor fields of endeavor.
  5. Purism will source, and manufacture the highest quality hardware.

The Purism is working with CrowdSupply to get the funding necessary to manufacture laptops built specifically for the PureOS.  They have good specs compatible to many business class middle to high-end laptops, with pricing being either $1,649 or $1,849.  If you are interested in trying out PureOS, a download is available here.

Will you be giving it a shot, or supporting their crowd funding campaign?  Do you think this is a good step in the right direction for a new distro?  I'm curious to know how many of you will be trying this out.  I'll have to spend some time this next weekend spinning it up as a virtual host and seeing what it offers.

And as always, stay safe goblins.
