In two days, we will be given Truth and be set free like no other Windows has done before. At least, that's the over-dramatic promise I'm thinking of as we get closer to the launch of Windows 10. I don't know about you, but the hype train has been real from everything I've seen... and so far, I don't see many reasons why that shouldn't hold true. Lots of good has come out of Microsoft since the changing of the guard, so why will I be waiting to get my copy?
The first reason is that I'm still a grizzled Windows IT admin that has seen many good things from Microsoft go wrong. I started my professional career with XP and Vista. I was actually a fan of Vista as a consumer. My Vista laptop ran smoothly for almost two years, only really acting up the last month I had it. I never made the switch to Windows 8 or 8.1. Not because I couldn't get used to the travesty of was done (there really shouldn't have been a focus of a tablet interface for desktop), but because it was a bit clunky to use and I knew for a fact that my users would never adopt it. Sorry Windows 8, you were just a head of your time, maybe if you came out a few years later.
Don't get me wrong, I do plan to switch to Windows 10 because I've seen, heard and experienced first hand (I am in the Insider Program) to know that most of the hype building up is legit. I just won't be standing in line to get the first round of software, a.k.a. the unofficial beta-production testers. Those of us who have been in IT long enough know that it's hardly wise to be the first one to get new software, there is always some bug that breaks something. Yes, the Insider Program has been testing it for a couple of months now, but the gears are shifting from a small group of IT pros and those experienced with Beta programs to full consumer launch. If there is one thing I know from IT support, is that people will find ways to break a system that us IT pros would never think of doing... usually because we know better.
I plan on waiting at least a month before I upgrade my home computer, and that'll be after I do a wipe and rebuild with Windows 7 first, and then upgrade, and then creating a fresh image. I am serious when I say that there is a lot that I've found exciting with Windows 10 that makes me think Microsoft will do almost all the right things for us with it. It's weird to say I'm excited to be getting into Windows 10, as no other Microsoft product has ever gotten me excited. Maybe all their marketing is effecting me, but I like to think it's because Microsoft learned from their mistakes and want to do right by us.
What do you think? Are you going to be jumping on the Windows 10 bandwagon on day one? Gonna hold off for a while and see how it gels? Already skedaddled and with Linux or Apple? I'd like to know what you're most excited for with Windows 10, and what makes you a bit nervous. Let's talk in the comments below!
And as always, stay safe goblins.
