Malwarebytes Just Upgrades Itself to Handle Junkware

As of June 22, Malwarebytes has acquired a new tool in it's utility belt of protection for consumers and businesses.  That tool is Junkware Removal Tool.  It's a utility that cleans up toolbars, adware and other Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs).  Let all IT pros rejoice that a tool many of us rely on to clean up infected computers has more capabilities to fight the good fight.

“At BleepingComputer.com, we’ve found that adware and PUPs have increasingly become one of the largest sources of problems for our visitors,” said Lawrence Abrams, owner of BleepingComputer.com. “With Malwarebytes and Junkware Removal Tool being two of the most popular downloads, it’s going to be exciting to see how these two programs will join forces to further protect our visitors against adware and PUPs.”

I'm looking forward to seeing what Malwarebytes will be able to do once they are able to integrate this into their software.  It's good to know that they are growing and finding new ways to keep us safer and not coasting on their reputation.  It's becoming more common place that IT pros are relying on layers of security to keep their company's secure.  No longer can we rely on just anti-virus to keep our users safe.  While many of us are in tough spots and it's difficult to get these layers built up as senior management doesn't always understand the cost of not doing something, it's good to know that some free tools can help us in a pinch.

In my experiences, Malwayrebytes has saved me a lot of time and hassle when an employee's computer gets infected.  While the normal response is to nuke that virus-laden device from orbit, I'm not able to do that with all... like the CEO's computer.  Some employees just make our jobs much harder than it needs to be with special configurations and software, and those are the ones that are a major PITA to rebuild.  Often times, Malwarebytes has been a tool I relied on to get those computers cleaned up and safe to use again.  After all, last thing I need is a secretary letting the COO know that they've been down two days because I had to rebuild her computer after she wanted to spend her lunch break playing a knock off match three game online.  Never again.

And as always, be safe goblins.
