Why GoblinByte?

#GoblinByte #awesome

So why go by the name GoblinByte?  What benefit is there to GoblinByte?  Is there any real connection between the two?  Well honestly there is a small bit of thought put into this name believe it or not, and it was a bit of a veered course from the original idea.

A nick name of mine for a while was Shark Bite, kind of a cool nick name based off of a pretty gnarly looking scar I have on my upper arm, I was told by some people it looked like I was bit by a shark.  Yeah I'll take it, that sounds like a pretty awesome nick name based on a pretty "manly" factoid right?  And when I got my invitation to become a beta tester for Google Domains, Shark Bite was my first choice.  www.sharkbite.com  was going to be my calling card, I'm going to swim around the web as a shark hacker taking a bite out of the bad guys, went to the registration screen and... its already taken... well damn.  Obviously I'm not going to be shark bite.  Maybe I can do a little tweak to the name and switch Bite to Byte.  www.sharkbyte.com  sounds equally as cool, I still get to keep my nickname but in a more binary awesome ray of sunshine.  I will become SharkByte.  But much to my dismay... once again it was taken.

All the bites and bytes were taken, anything that sounded ferocious and terrifying, something that would knock you back a few feet was owned by someone else.  I want something cool, I want something stealthy, something shadowy, something powerful.  Nothing dumb, nothing moronic, but something sneaky and clever.

Logical conclusion?  Get on some google fu and wiki cruise control and look up mythical beasts, something that people understand but aren't terrified of.  Something easy to spell.  BasiliskByte sounds cool... but really what is that?  Basilisk is a very special type of creature, we know turns you to stone, it is a terrifying animal, it can gaurd your secrets if you're in Salazar Slytherine's secret chamber.  I'm going to have to tell people how to spell it though... I really don't want to have to spell my website to everyone I want to visit, that dramatically decreases interest.  No I need a name that rolls of the tongue I need something simple.

There was too many things to weigh out, it had to be simple, but it had to portray what I thought.  It had to invoke imagery without an explanation.  Goblins... people know goblins... dirty little half wit monsters... but greedy.  Hmm this could be something.  I can say www.goblinbyte.com, it has that byte I want, along side what I picture to be a clever little greedy monster.  A clever little greedy monster with one job and one job only, keep bytes safe and hoard them away.

Sure not the most elegant creature to choose from, but is hacking and technology ever elegant?  This was the realization and the reason why I grabbed GoblinByte as quick as I could.  I'm that dirty little hacker who sneaks around and keeps people safe.  My goal here since the start was to help people learn a hacking trick or two to defend from hackers.  Network hardening, hardware hardening, software modification.  Of course some things shared on the topics discussed may have negative implications, but that's really anything about hacking in general.  Being a carpenter can be used for evil if you oh so choose to use your skills in that manner.

Just thought I'd share, I know GoblinByte is kind of a strange name, just wanted people to understand why it is.  If you like the topics of this blog, please feel free to share via social media, increased traffic gives me more reason to type up these posts, AND I'm also looking to see if anyone would be interested in being a guest blogger, if so leave a comment below and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.  And as always, be safe my goblins.
