Leaving a paper trail in any way shape or form that can point back to ourselves can sometimes be a blessing, and at other times damning. If we're talking about a business using these, in very few cases will it ever be a good idea, but in terms of individuals who want to have a small bit of anonymity in an otherwise visual world? Self destructing messages are pretty awesome.
What is a self destructing message?
Most of the world is familiar with email and texting, where a string of words or pictures are mashed together, thrown in the pouch of a digital mailman, and that mailman delivers it to the desired destination. Pretty standard approach, and highly sensible. With a self destructing message, it doesn't stay in place beyond certain criteria, be it an amount of time, a date, any of that can be the cause for deletion. You read it once, it deletes. You have 15 seconds to read it, it deletes. The email will delete within 15 minutes of being sent, read or not.
Think of it like our old friend inspector gadget. When he recieved a message he would read it, and the second he was done reading said message, it would self destruct leaving a beautiful cloud of misery for his boss. This is the very same principle used in todays self destructing messages. Those who want to see it can't see it because its either gone, or locked down in one of many different fashions.
Is it safe?
Within a certain margin of error these are safe, although traffic can be hijacked, redirected, or compromised, most (not all) of these programs available have some form of fail safe. That fail safe could be encryption, could be screen shot awareness which it will not allow for screen shots of the message to be taken. But as is usual with anything good, there is a small group of people trying to find a hole.
Using the world famous Snapchat as an example priding itself on the ability to keep people safe. Encountered quite a slew of applications that contradict that previous statement. For iOS you can download Snapbox which allows for the ability to save EVERY picture recieved after the date of installation. Or Casper for android allows for the same thing to occur.
Disclaimer for saving information!!!
Self destructing messages such as those sent by Snapchat possess a reasonable expectation of privacy. If the end user believes they are safe sending a suggestive photo via Snapchat due to the fact that image will be deleted post viewing. Saving these images can in many cases be grounds for arrest, so use these applications at your own discretion.
Self Destructing Email
As a chrome user and gmail user, the plugin mxHero by mail2cloud gives the ability to track your email wherever it goes, as well as schedule it to be sent, and also give a certain time frame for deleting post reading. Assuming there is sensitive data in the email this could be a good thing.
Why stop there when we can self destruct email addresses though? A service known as 10 minute email is one of the best tools in complete anonymity. It may not delete the email sent, but it will delete the entire email address. The recipient may never know who the sender is, or there can be a level of secrecy in small groups. Send the email, and 10 minutes later there is no trace of that email address left on the internet. Wiped clean from existence.

What CyberDust is, is a fully encrypted messaging application which is cross platform for Android, Windows Phone, and iOS. CyberDust allows for the ability to send media, pictures, videos, your location, all of which holding a timer and rules for length of stay.

One key flaw with this model (same model as for snapchat) is the information can only sent between individuals who have the application. This means the messaging applications are only viable if the intended recipient also has this sort of application.
