Lets start by explaining there is a clear difference between hardware and software. Hardware you can touch, software you can't. But what is software? And how does it work?
Software is a series of bits and bytes arranged in an order that results in an output response from a users input. 1 + 1 = 2 if you will, you're just bringing the 1.
Hardware is a physical thing, a piece of wood with solder and wire attached, giving software a path to go through.
This means when you get a hardware update, you are replacing your physically existing thing that you possess. You have to go to the store for one, and yippee new iphone that you'll drop and crack its screen in 6 months.
When you get a software update, it is just rearranging your electrons, bits, and bytes saved on your hardware, maybe adding some, maybe taking some away, for a more stream line enjoyable experience.
You can be standing in JC penny and get a software update unlike a hardware update (unless you're classifying your new 3" pumps as hardware).
But it seems some people can't see where one part of their phone stops, and one part ends. In my fiancee's case she was curious if her physical existing connection would allow for more throughput with a new software update. No, it doesn't make sense, the hardware is limited to what its capable of doing. If it's delivering 5V of electricity and 10 Gbps throughput, that's what its designed to do, its very unlikely that a vendor of any sort would use software to limit a cables speed (it can be done though).
Now this cable thing is just a snow flake on the bigger ice berg of things people do or get conned into doing. Lets look at the "apple wave" (pic at top of thread) where people were told that if they updated to the new iOS, they'd get the ability to charge their phone with a microwave. It sounds cool, its sounds like something that could exist, BUT you're looking at hardware and software being the same thing. iOS gets SOFTWARE updates, not physical alterations. This hoax resulted in people buying phones and microwaving them same day with catastrophic backlashes, exploding phones, phones catching fire, and apple got blamed. No ladies and gentlemen, don't microwave a phone, its dumb.
Secondly the iOS 7 waterproofing, where by upgrading your old phone to iOS7 you could dunk it in a pool or lake without anything bad happening... and people did it, once again to yell at apple.
Long story short if its something you PHYSICALLY don't have, if you can't touch it or can't witness it happen in the real world and not on a screen, its not getting updated with your software, don't trust it, don't fall for it. From the perspective of the troll though, its funny to watch people fail, don't be troll food. Until next time, be safe my goblins.
