For quite some time I was a not so sure what I wanted to do with my life computer guy. I worked and fixed on giant printers, I sold computers, and I played on one. Nothing more than that, whats the next step right? I was in my very early 20's, maybe 22, got a job working at a big box retailer selling computers. Never had a day of formal training, I can make flash drives store data, I can remove a virus... but what was my purpose?
After dealing with my immaturity and eventually realizing I needed to make enough money to support myself and possibly learn a skill, I made it a point to start doing the work provided training video's and quizzes. These aren't mandated but are very useful. A series of video's provided by norton, by HP, by NetGear, just generic consumer level knowledge with a little bit of oomph for those who want to know a bit more. Wasn't anything fancy, but it got me interested.
Next step was for me to go home and start looking up new things that I could learn, someone mentioned a CCNA and... through the magic of internet I started clicking odd links that took me through the rabbit hole of intrigue. The goals of many of these network oriented certifications is security, knowing how people get in. Hmm but you're a good guy, you need to know how to break down doors?
Interesting, to be a good guy you must first be a bad guy?
We then hired someone at my store who had the same mentality as I, be a bad guy first right? We'll refer to him as Dr.Doom, due to his job, which I'll get to later on, don't want to hurt anyone's employment. Dr.Doom knew about start up programs that I was barely aware of, he knew a bit of visual basic and batch files, we discussed this stuff together and... we had an entire display case of computers to test our malicious code on. I created a batch file that opened 5 copies of itself, which in turn would create 5 copies of itself each, so on and so forth until the computer was forced to crash, put it in the start up... computer was done.
He created a visual basic file that looped every 10 seconds and would open the dvd drive, and promptly close it, put in the start up, super annoying. He was also in college doing this, he had a slight head start on me and was learning this stuff all the time, which gave him one big advantage. He went to school sponsored hacking events, learning new skills, getting better, and eventually signing a contract with a government agency promising he'll be a white hat from now on. Good guy, and more on his story in another post (I told him about Kali and Back Track you're welcome Dr.Doom) he's got a nice squishy job which is awesome and I envy.
This ideology is interesting though, the fact that I can make a computer do what I want a computer to do, versus having a computer what its willing to give me. The point of getting somewhere I shouldn't go is amazing. I've urban explored for the rush of getting to places off limits to the public, and why stop there? As I've said a while back I classify myself as a hacker, sure I'm not one of these mad skilled super beasts who create telephone denying burner phones, but one day...
I want to be a bad guy so that I may be a good guy, I am a hacker, my name is Ryan Jones. Until next time my goblins, be safe.
